What is the stratum corneum and how does it affect skincare?
Skin, it’s our body’s largest organ and provides a variety of functions outside of offering us a nice complexion. It regulates body temperature, controls sensations such as hot and cold, and is our first defense against the elements. It is composed of three layers – the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Each of these layers has its own purpose. The epidermis is our waterproof outer layer, the dermis contains our sweat glands, hair follicles, and connective tissue, and the hypodermis is made up of fat and connective tissue.
The stratum corneum, or the horny layer, is the outermost layer of the epidermis. It is important because it acts as our body’s first layer of protection against bacteria, toxins, viruses and other pollutants. It also keeps skin hydrated by preventing moisture loss. The cells that make up this layer are in a constant state of change and are continuously shedding. As we age, this process slows down, creating a build up of dead cells and making it more difficult for our favorite skincare products to reach the deeper layers. So although the stratum corneum is designed to keep out the elements, it is also quite effective at keeping out your skincare products’ active ingredients in the process.
That’s where Deminuage comes in. We designed our NanoPen to work with our NanoChips to bypass this horny layer to deliver these ingredients deeper into the skin. Doing so, instantly makes them more effective. Wondering how it works? The NanoChip is composed of a grid of microscopic NanoTips that create nanoscale channels in the stratum corneum. It is through these channels that the active ingredients travel to reach the deeper layers. And about 20 minutes after you finish using your NanoPen, these channels close ensuring a safe, painless experience with no downtime.
