How to care for your skin in your 30s

Photo by Michael Dam on UnsplashTurning 30 – While some might be intimidated by the milestone, it’s a time to be revered. This decade is full of potential that can find you feeling more confident in your own skin, rising on the corporate ladder, or beginning a family of your own. With these exciting changes, comes added responsibilities, so it’s important to keep your skin routine on track. While aging is a natural part of life, here are some products and lifestyle changes you can make to ensure you continue to do so beautifully.

Your skin concerns
The sun-baking sins of your past will begin to come back to haunt you in your 30s in the form of brown spots, fine lines, and crows feet. You may also start to notice a loss of elasticity, newly formed wrinkles, and dark circles thanks to a slow down in collagen production.

Preventative skincare
Your skincare routine shouldn’t be the only improvement you’re dedicating yourself in your 30s. Leading a healthy lifestyle is equally, if not more important. While cute new additions or an increased workload might make you want to put your health on the back burner, taking the time to focus in on yourself will help you better take on the added responsibility this decade brings. Opt for healthier, antioxidant-rich meals, exercise regularly, sleep well (laughable advice for new parents), and hydrate. Switch out any bad coping habits you picked up in your 20s (i.e. smoking and copious amounts of ice cream) with healthier versions such as yoga, meditation, and gym time.

Enjoy the sun safety
As always, SPF should be an integral part of your morning routine. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the heavyweight champions of keeping UVA, UVB, and all other wavelengths out, so opt for sunscreens where they’re featured.

Create the right routine for you
Just when you thought you knew exactly what your skin needed, it goes and changes again. You might experience that your skin is now drier or more oily than it was in your 20s. Take the time to relearn your skin type, especially if products you once swore by are no longer working for you. At this stage in your life, your morning routine should focus on protecting your face from the sun and other environmental factors that fast forward aging and your evening routine should focus on rejuvenation.

Invest in the right products

Cleanser and Toner
Cleanse twice a day with a gentle, hydrating cleanser, being extra vigilant at night to ensure you remove all makeup, dirt, and bacteria. And If you haven’t already switched to a gentler alcohol-free toner, do so now. This will help tighten pores, get rid of toxins, and balance your skin – all without drying it out.

Antioxidant Serum
Use this in addition to SPF in your morning routine to help protect your skin from environmental radicals, such as sun and pollution. Opt for Vitamin C serum, which will protect, brighten, and stimulate collagen growth.

Exfoliant
If you haven’t yet, choose a chemical exfoliant such as a salicylic, alpha, or beta hydroxy acid as a gentler, more-effective way to help rid your skin of dead cells and help promote the renewal process.

Retinol
It’s now time to add a little Vitamin A to your routine. Retinol reduces enlarged pore and pigmentation as well as increases cell turnover. P.S. do not use this if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Moisturizers
In addition to your daily moisturizer, you’ll want to invest in an eye cream to protect the windows to your soul from crow’s feet, puffiness, and under eye bags. Add in a night cream to repair and rejuvenate your face while you’re doing the same for your body.

Masks
Incorporating a hydrating mask into your weekly routine not only feels luxurious, but is a great way to give your skin a much-needed moisture boost.

Love thy skin
While good skincare might feel like just another responsibility in a decade that is jam-packed with nothing but, try to treat it as a small part of your day that is dedicated entirely to you. Taking a few short minutes for your daily NanoPen facial along with these other anti-aging steps is not just a small investment in feeling good in the present, but continuing to do so in the years to come.
