While most of these are small and completely outweighed by the benefits of microneedling, this post dives a little further into these possible side effects.

Short-term side effects
Since microneedling needs to create miniscule trauma to repair the skin, irritation and inflammation can be expected after use. Your skin will probably feel flushed and red, similar to a sunburn, but there is also the possibility of swelling, peeling, bumps, breakouts, and in some uncommon cases, bleeding. It is not recommended to take blood thinners or aspirin during the time of treatment, because both could increase the likelihood of bleeding.  If you are currently in the midst of a breakout or suffering from warts, eczema, psoriasis, or sunburn, it is better to hold off on your treatment because it will only exacerbate these conditions. Using retinol, glycolic acids and salicylic acids immediately after treatment can also do the same. 

Derma roller risks 
Infection can occur with both microneedling and at-home derma rolling, so it is important to take the necessary precautions during use. Be sure to thoroughly clean your derma roller before use, as well as your face and hands. Invest in the proper size derma roller and take the time to learn the correct techniques before your first use. As a non-professional, using longer needles could have substantial consequences such as bleeding, scarring, and opening the skin up to infection.

Microneedling risks 
Before you set up a microneedling appointment, do your research to ensure that the person in charge of your appointment is a medical skincare professional or licensed dermatologist. Also, ask about the topical medications that will be used before and after to ensure that your skin does not have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients.
